PYPY — Sacred Times (Goner)
At various points in Sacred Times, PYPY jitters through a fusillade of funk shrapnel a la ESG, chugs a fuzzy freak beat like the Dirtbombs and tears a hole in the sky psychedelic-style. How you think about this veteran Montreal psych punk band depends, largely, on where you put the needle down, but if the form shifts, the intensity stays constant. This is one of the best punk albums of 2024, and not coincidentally, the hardest to pigeonhole.
This is PYPY’s second full-length album, following a decade-long hiatus in which members revisited other projects. Annie-Claude Deschênes, the singer and keyboardist, Phillippe Clement, the bass player and drummer Simon Besré, all did time in noise-freaked, body-shocked, caterwauling Duchess Says. Guitarist Roy Vucino lent his axe to Wire-y, Pop Group-ish Red Mass (and earlier played with CPC Gangbangs and Les Sexareenos, among others). Still, they meet here, a decade later, in seamless synchrony. Careening vocal flourishes, chaotic beats and incendiary riffs flare within locked-down, disciplined structures. Sacred Time is as tight as it is wild.
Start with the single, “Lonely Striped Sock,” with its lurching bass line, its electroshocked guitar shrieks, its punk goddess deadpan rant. It’s a dead ringer for first wave, female-forward punk bands like ESG and Delta 5—in the best possible way—made fresh and funky by squeaky barrage of keyboard banging (this is literally my favorite sound on the whole record).
The band has a thing about poodles, apparently, dedicating not one but two very different songs to their curly headed canines. “Poodle Escape” rains sublime and radiant surf chords, while a carnivalesque keyboard melody goes soft in the heat. Deschênes whispers ominously in French way back in the mix as a squiggle of sci-fi synth flutters up to the fore. “Poodle Wig” slams and pogoes on a drum machine beat in a Francophile garage rock explosion worthy of Jacques Dutronc. Woof.
Vucino is quite a guitar player, and he lights his instrument pretty much on fire in psychedelic “15 Sec.” a lurid purple haze hanging over its sprawl and mayhem. He sings lead on the Devo-esque “I Am a Simulation” and while not quite as can’t-look-away compelling as Deschênes, his singing another color in PYPY’s considerable palette.
By now you’ve likely gathered that Sacred Times is volatile and wild, taking giant swings in any number of generations. That’s exciting, but even more so because with all that thrashing, they never lose the groove. What a good time these Sacred Times can be.

This came out a year ago. I remember hearing it for the first time and being excited about life. Yay. But at the same time, COVID had different plans for me and everybody and everything quickly went to shit. It’s rare that a band like MORON’S MORONS comes around to fuck with you in that perfect fucking way that makes you want to just get drunk, jump around, dance like a lunatic and just forget your problems. It’s stupid good punk rock. STUPID GOOD. And that’s the best kind of good, morons. Seek out their shit at Slovenly Records OK?

Press Inquiries: Jo Murray
It was spring, 1999. New Bomb Turks had just returned from their first tour of Australia in a suspended animation. They soon procured ace drumsman, dessert aficionado [not a typo], and all-around great guy, Sam Brown. It suddenly felt like a brand new beast, but they had an album to deliver forthwith, and nary a new song in sight! Nails were chomped to the cuticle, empty beer cans sat in the corner mocking us…
Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes (or at least like a bartender finding another unopened bottle of mezcal at last call), New Bomb Turks soared again. Within four months (May-August 1999), Sam slipped right into the NBT stool, 12 new songs were cooked up easy as fryin’ an egg, and they were back on the road with the Hellacopters to hash those new ones into place.
By the time the band got to Jim Diamond’s Ghetto Recorders studio in Detroit – his rep revving up from production jobs with the curdled cream of that Detroit trash-rock scene (Clone Defects, Detroit Cobras, Dirtbombs, White Stripes, Andre Williams) – New Bomb Turks were piqued like a baby screamin’ for a higher push on a swing set.
Over four days and nights, the band enjoyed their easiest and most fun recording session – the only break being a jaunt over to a bar to see a reunited Real Kids, their first show in years, which floored the band and only added more mezcal to the fire.
Final mixes were left to Jim Diamond, and by the time he forwarded them to the band, overdub ideas had hatched, and about half the record was remixed with local studio wiz, Jeff Graham, in Columbus. A middle ground was eventually found, and what resulted was Nightmare Scenario (Epitaph Records, 2000) – the fifth album in their six album/three compilation catalog, and the one the band believe is their best.
Like every band ever, the years have supplied moments of mixing rumination. So last year, when the band saw the 20th anniversary of Nightmare Scenario right up on their ass, they asked Jim Diamond if he had his original mixes lying around his palatial estate. He found them on a DAT (look it up, kids) tucked underneath a pile of professional recording deck manuals (i.e., old MAD mags). Lo and behold, they were even more ripping and burning and stinging than remembered. There was the 20th birthday idea, screamin’ like a brat!
So here you have the original mixes of Nightmare Scenario that Jim Diamond finished in November 1999, ensconced deep in his legendary, now torn-down Detroit digs. Ain’t saying it’s better than the original, just leaner and meaner. But don’t take our word for it – take yours when you’re screamin’ along too!

Roadkill Radio #21: The World’s Longest Weather Report
Welcome to Roadkill’s very own weather report. It’s long, it’s excruciating and oh so irrelevant to anyone not stuck in the middle of it. But Benny Two-Shoes is, and now y’all gotta hear about it. But don’t fret! In between his monotonous and melodramatic synopsis, are some blitzkreiging songs featuring Roky Erickson, birthday boy Iggy Pop, Sulfur City, Les Sexareenos, David Bowie, Ms Moneynine…

San Francisco's last and only rock and roll band THE OKMONIKS has teamed up with Slovenly Recordings for “Afterparty Fever!!!” Here are nine new houserockin’ woman led punk rock’n’roll blasts that capture the essence of a party that just don’t stop. This particular all-nighter was recorded live in a small room, and you can tell from the screams, handclaps, and peals of laughter that this 17 minute end result was produced in a gloriously boisterous session. “Afterparty Fever!!!” captures the girls-to-the-front, make-room-for-dancing, leave-'em-wanting-more live show they've been dishing out for freaks world-wide for the past two decades. The OKs are fronted by Helene 33 on vox, simultaneously playing impossible sounding, finger stretching 60s Ace Tone Top 5 organ tones while tossing it around like a toy… It must be seen to be believed, and a believer you shall be! The Okmoniks recorded and produced every song on this album, and wrote them all with the forgivable exception of one cover by Tucson 60s punk outfit The Grodes. “Afterparty Fever!!!” sounds like a band in 1977 doing their favorite 1966 stompers: devastating dancers like “Don't Wanna See You No More” and “I'll Let You In” could fit comfortably in a John Waters teen shimmy montage, giving way to rockers like “He Left the Party with Me” and “Summer Break Up” that could serve as the captions for a comic panel in “Punk” Magazine.

Slovenly Recordings presents Carbondale’s creepiest blood suckers PET MOSQUITO and their “Pre Apocalypse Motorcycle Music” EP, recorded to four track at the “historical” Lost Cross house. Pet Mosquito’s blistering take on Midwestern garage punk draws inspiration from the sounds of a chopped exhaust pipe ripping your eardrums apart whilst you drink a warm beer on the 4th of July. These four songs take the existential anxiety of our pre-apocalyptic world and transmute it into furiously danceable bops that include songs about a femme fatale who sleeps with the Zodiac Killer, secret government projects, and more nonsensical non-nonsense. You’ll be ready to take on any CIA agent, alien, or zombie biker that comes your way. It’s fast, it’s fun, it’s Pre Apocalypse Motorcycle Music!

Has the world actually gotten stupider since FRVITS released their debut EP “Stupid Era” back in 2021? We inquired with Grok and the answer seems to be a resounding “Uhhhh Yes!” Montreal’s first and only dot matrix rock & roll band are back with five pummeling ruminations on what it’s like to watch civilization circle the drain on Planet IQ 32: Abstract songs about monkeys making off with the ISS, strategies for intermittent fasting, learning to love your kidney stones and instructions on how to attend a punk show in the winter. Four new originals sung in garborated French, Spanish and English, plus a cover of The Stupids’ classic “Wipeout” featuring shred-tastic leads by Choyce (PyPy/ CPC Gangbangs / Red Mass / Sexareenos). Mixed and mastered by David Forcier (CIVIC, SWAB, Itchy and The Nits). Rotting fruit for rotting detestables!

ANGEL FACE, THE OKMONIKS, TH’ LOSIN STREAKS & PYPY AT GONERFEST 2024
THE OKMONIKS will be coming to the stage Thursday nite at 7:45
The ‘OKs’, as they address one another, are quartet of true lifers adept at good-times garage rock cheekily self-described as “DMZ-meets-The Lyres” (that is pretty funny), Led by a one Helene 33, this is the exact organ-driven cave-punk party implied by song titles like “Teenage Timebomb”, “Rustle Up Some Action” or “It’s Not You”.

TH' LOSIN STREAKS will be coming to the stage Thursday evening at 6:15
Sacramento’s longtime enthusiasts of obscure freakbeat and well-dressed but short, sharp and searing freakbeat/60’s garage. Originally active in the 00s and known for their sole 2004 LP, Sounds of Violence, Th’ Streaks broke up in 2010 but returned in 2018 with the This Band Will Self-Destruct In T-Minus LP and third LP, Last House, earlier this year (all on Slovenly).

PYPY will be coming to the stage Friday evening at 7:30
Members of Duchess Says, CPC Gangbangs, Red Mass, and Thee Sexareenos, etc return after a decade absence with the best take on post-punk we’ve heard in recent memory. Equally likely to lock into an ESG/Delta 5 groove with a Hall and Oates hook as it is to grow a hundred foot tall wall of riffs and roll right over you. Upcoming second full-length on Goner!!

ANGEL FACE will be coming to the stage Saturday evening at 8:15
Tokyo’s Angel Face is the latest excuse for Fink of Teengenerate/Firestarter/American Soul Spiders fame to go full parkour on a venue stage. We know this is one of those ‘you had me at ‘Tokyo’...” moments, and you know to expect a lot of incendiary but smiling chaos courtesy of a type of rock enthusiasm we just don’t see very often. Seriously, this band would choose boiled leather jackets as their last meal. Garage Punk royalty from a scene that has spawned some of the best!

MARK SULTAN "Filthy Rat" EP by Mark Sultan
From http://www.yellowgreenred.com/
Mark Sultan I’m A Filthy Rat / Heart Attack 7″ (Slovenly)
I had assumed that Mark Sultan was one of the many distinguished garage-rock musicians who kept the surname of his earliest band even after making a name for himself elsewhere (y’know, like Jay Reatard and Mike Sniper and such), but I did my due diligence and it turns out he wasn’t a member of The Sultans, but rather did time in Les Sexareenos and The Spaceshits. There’s still time for him to change it to Mark Spaceshit, I suppose, but whatever the case, Mark Sultan has been a fount of garage-punk for decades now, and is showing no signs of slowing. This new two-song single, taken from the sessions of his Let Me Out album, are well done, revealing his sly charisma and knack for simple yet effective hooks. “I’m A Filthy Rat” lists off reasons why he’s a terrible human being to a slinky organ-led groove, whereas “Heart Attack” messily bops from side to side with lazy teenage angst, even if Sultan is closer in age to parents of teenagers than teenagers themselves. Nostalgic garage-rock tunes with all the trimmings, but performed with enough gusto and lack of polish that I find them endearing and enjoyable no matter how many similar songs were written before.
